Google Pixel 3 First Impression

By Subhajit Ghosh

Introduction: –

Pretty much everything was leaked about Pixel 3, so there shouldn’t be that much excitement after unveiling the Real Deal. But as it turns out that Google always has something up its sleeve to create ripple within the crowd. This time they have again done it with their software Excellency. Except that big ‘notch’. We’ll come to that later.

Core: –

The new Pixel 3 is even sharper in hands. Better software optimization, snappier and feels solid both in terms of hardware & software. Straight out of the box it is running the latest Snapdragon 845 and Android 9.0 (Pie), stock version. Although the 4GB RAM for an Android flagship in 2018 makes me think twice about the software experience in future. But for now we just have to wait until it shows its weakness down the road.

Build: –

Design wise the most significant change is the sim tray being moved at the bottom, consequently one side of the device is completely blank. Also the device is glass build but the back is a soft glass finish, which gives much better grip. Strangely the part which got me stuck in terms of hardware is the colour variant named “Not Pink”. Like Seriously…??? The prominent colours of power button is also appreciated. And talking about details in the black version the power pin inside the device is also black in colour to give a complete black finish, which shows the level of dedication towards presentation.

Camera: –

Then comes the biggest question, what about the camera? Does it still hold the record among smartphones for having the best lens? Well, Google again proved that sometimes less is better, with their Pixel 3. The undisputed king of mobile cameras still carries the crown with their single 12MP camera. But weird enough, why dual front facing camera…??? Yes, I get the point that one is for Selfies & the other is for wefies or ourfies or usfies…!!! Whatever you want to call it. Then why not a wide angle in the rear? We just have to see how the experience goes.

Extras: –

Conflicting the trend, Google took some steps which are neither yayyy…..nor nyaaa… First of all the dual front facing cameras and a speaker creates this huge notch at the top, which looks really ugly at first look.

Then there is the chin at the bottom of the device. In the timeline where every brand is trying their best to make the screen edge to edge, Google went off the track to bring something new.

The notch in IPhone XS Max is wider but the notch in Pixel 3 is not that wide, instead deeper. Well I don’t think that’s going to be big of a deal. Because as we got used to notches, we will also get use to big notches.

And the chin at the bottom is an obvious trade for the front firing stereo speakers which is paired with the speaker in the notch. Impressively google managed to seal the device to support IP68 even with those front stereo speaker & that’s a big one to notice.

Conclusion: –

The Pre-Orders have already begun and the shipping is expected to start from 1st November 2018. The Pixel 3 is priced at $799 and Pixel 3 XL is priced at $899. So considerably the Pixel flagship is about 20% cheaper in comparison to Apple flagship base model ($999). So that’s something to consider as well. Well, time will tell which trade-offs made Pixel 3 the best, the good or the worst. Full Specification of the device is given below.
